If you are using pumpkins or other perishable things, be aware of when these living things will begin to go bad. Find organisations, clubs, or teams for your kids. These activities are a great way for kids to meet new people, explore interests, and gain better social skills. Find something they like to do. It could be: art, music, reading, dancing, chess, video games, and so much more. Many cities offer classes and clubs for kids. 

Find a team for your kids to join. Organized sports help kids become more active and to work towards building habits that lead to a healthy life. Sports also help kids become better team players and learn how to work with others. There are city league sports for beginners and club sports for more advanced players. 

Take some time out of your busy day to play with your kids. Kids love being able to spend time with their parents. You could introduce your kids to a childhood board game or video game you used to play. Or go on a walk to your local park and play a game with them. It does not have to be some big activity you have been planning for weeks. Sometimes the simple things are better.

Minimize distractions 

For those who have children who are normally at school or whose spouse goes out to his/her place of employment daily, having extra people at home can become downright difficult. WAH folks have a good routine, if not, they probably aren’t very successful at it! Set up a place for everyone to have a dedicated work/school spot. This spot should be one to which you can go without phone, video games, TV, etc. Set up rules for this space. 

• Can more than one person work at their work station at the same time? 

• What about food or drink while working? 
• Can anyone interrupt another whilst they are in thier work zone? 

Answering these questions and setting expectations can greatly help as the time ticks away on the Stay In, Stay Safe directive. 

Spend a little time as a family/couple 

Having someone around when you’re accustomed to being alone can lead to a long string of distractions and sharing videos and the day can fly by with little else getting done. If you all know that you will have time later to share, laugh, etc., you can focus better on your work. I find that staggering the people in the workstations and breaks helps with my family’s efficiency. 

Set up and spend time alone! 

This is really important. If you find that everyone being together results in stress, becoming stir crazy or even plotting to run away, it’s a long-overdue sign that you need a break. Take one. Set apart some time for each person to check out, be alone, whatever that looks like. This simple effort can be a lifesaver and help you survive being alone in close quarters.

In an effort to save money, our residents often turn down the thermostat overnight. Not only does this save money, sleeping at a lower temperature creates an environment that is more conducive to sleep. That’s great, but what about the extra flat sheet, you ask? Here’s the deal – when you make your bed, add a flat sheet on top of your blankets and underneath your comforter, quilt, or bedspread to keep you warmer on cold nights. Since blankets are typically loosely woven, adding a sheet on top of them will trap body heat and redirect it back to you. Believe it or not, it really helps!  

What type of sheet works best; you ask? Or if you didn’t ask but now are filled with the irresistible drive to know which is best, here we go! For moderately cold nights, use a regular cotton or percale sheet. November always seems to fly by in a blur, what with finishing up the Halloween festivities and gearing up for Christmas. Retailers have already gone into high gear, being that this year, Thanksgiving is about as late as it can be in the month, and they are claiming that as there is a shortened holiday shopping season, defined by the traditional start of the season, Black Friday, that they need to push holiday shopping sooner rather than later. Honestly, last I checked, the stores already are in full holiday mode, which usually comes before Black Friday anyway! 

Have you ever heard about Small Business Saturday? 

Along with all the buzz surrounding Black Friday, there is a growing and lesser-known shopping event on the Saturday following Thanksgiving, known as Small Business Saturday. This event was created many years ago with assistance from American Express to encourage people to look for small businesses in their communities to support. For the first few years, you could sign up to receive a $100 prepaid American Express gift card at no charge, simply for pledging to use it at a small business. Sadly, that is no longer the case! 

Think small business first in person or online 

When you are doing your holiday shopping planning, is there something that you can purchase for someone that comes from a small business? This could be from a brick and mortar store, online, or even direct sales. If you aren’t sure what you want, ask about gift certificates (great for restaurants) too.

Within the next week, what do you know, but the exact same set started to show up in my Facebook Marketplace recommended products (don’t even get me started on how they knew) and get this – they were $15 for the set. What would you have done? I showed him and he sheepishly agreed that it was a hasty purchase and that next time, we could shop around.

What is a price book?

One of the best tools to save money is to have a good idea of the price points for those things that you need to buy. For a long time, I kept this in my noggin with all those other open brain browser tabs. I knew where the best milk, gas, eggs, and prescription prices by heart. When this became too much, I started with a rudimentary spreadsheet and listed prices and stores with a date. After a few months, I just put these items into my book each time I went shopping and the price book was born.

Had we been able to reference a price book for a comparison, we would have easily seen that the “deal” was certainly not so and saved quite a bit of money! Your price book should include those things that you purchase often as well as those that you are looking for – cars, appliances, etc., so that when you see a “deal,” you can quickly reference it to verify that it is truly a deal.

What is the best format for a price book?

OK, here’s the secret – whatever format that you will use. Pretty printables are easily found online and many are free to act as a template for your price book. I prefer mine with Google Sheets as a shared document. This works for me because it is shared with my hubby and he’s able to add to it (which he really doesn’t do that often) and see where he should stop for that milk or bread on his way to our cozy abode at Legacy Court Apartments in Midvale, Utah.

Whichever format you use, the key is to take small steps to maintain it. After you have your price book all set up, you can update it when you see a huge change in price or make a quick cross-check every few months or so.
