These items can tend to be expensive, so combining a few mechanical things with things that you have homemade is a great way to make your home spooky and scary. One thing that is very easy to make at home is a fake person, a dummy, that you can set up in all sorts of scary scenarios. This type of thing can be made with old clothing, and can even be stuffed with the old clothing.
