The most common allergens found in candy

Food allergies are growing in their manifestation in our lives for whatever reason. These often present in clusters, with a highly allergic person being allergic to several foods at once. Some of the more common food allergies include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, and soy, which are often listed as ingredients in popular candies.

What about gluten?

There are differing levels of a sensitivity to gluten, ranging from getting a headache or stomachache with a sensitivity to becoming seriously ill for those who have been diagnosed with Celiac Disease. Obviously, cookies or wafers in treats is troublesome, but did you know one of the biggest sources of gluten in candy is Twizzlers? In fact, Twizzlers is so commonly a food that tricks those with Celiac Disease, that just saying the word brings many groans and horrible stories from the gluten free Celiac Disease crowd.

What to get instead

Most hard candies are safe for those with allergies as well as lollipops (not filled) or small boxes of raisins. Toy spider rings, stickers, novelty tattoos, and glow sticks are options for you if you want to avoid treats altogether. As these can be more expensive than a bag of candy, you can get a few of these items for those who have allergies (and ask the little ghosts and goblins and thier parents at the door) and pass out the more traditional treats for those lucky kiddos who do not have food allergies.

Take Note of your Exit and Entry Habits

Depending on what your current routine is it will determine how you should set up your entryway or mudroom. Assess everyone’s needs when they enter and exit your home. Look at the current clutter that is surrounding your entryway. This will tell you what you need in terms of organization. Installing shoe cubbies or hooks for backpacks is always helpful.

Make it Seasonally Appropriate

If you tend to have winter coats taking up the majority of the available space in your entryway it might be time to think seasonally. Storing your winter coats and accessories during the summer in a linen closet or in storage bins can free up a lot of the storage space you may need in your entryway.

Go Vertical

Floor space is often very limited when it comes to entryways and mudrooms. You can easily go vertical with your storage by installing shoe cubbies, hooks, shelves, and even cupboards. Take into consideration what your family will need exactly when it comes to their daily routine. If you have little ones at home, consider placing hooks at a lower level for them to store their own coats and backpacks. You can provide even more organized storage options with bins to keep all the small accessories together.

Combat Moisture

Now that you have conquered the clutter on your floor you will want to make sure you can keep it slip-free as well. Having necessary shoe storage as well as a mat in front of your door can help you to keep your floor free of moisture, especially during the spring and winter months.

Wash your Linens

The first step you will want to take when it comes to cleaning your bedroom is to gather all the linens and toss them in the washer. Take everything off of your bed, including your comforters and pillows, and toss them in the wash. You will even want to consider giving your curtains a much needed wash as well. Make sure to follow washing directions for each piece.

Clear Off your Flat Surfaces

Our nightstand and desks tend to accrue the most amount of clutter in our bedrooms. Start by removing all of the items off of your night stand or desk and sorting through them. You will want to also empty out your cupboards or drawers. Once you have what you need, without any clutter taking up the storage space you do have available, you will be able to keep a clean and organized desk and nightstand.

Organize your Clothes

The biggest dilemma we have when it comes to our bedrooms is the amount of clothing we are trying to find the room for. If you find that your closet and dresser are overflowing with the amount of clothing you have, it may be time to sort through what you have. Designate piles determining what you will keep, donate, or place in storage. Organize the clothing you will be keeping by placing what you wear the most in easy to reach places in your closet or dresser.

Schedule your Spring Cleaning Days

The warm weather brings outdoor activities and added chaos to our schedules. You will want to make it a point to schedule specific cleaning days on your calendar. This way you are sure you have the time available to really give your apartment the cleaning it needs. Breaking it up into a few days within the month will make sure you don’t burn yourself out but still get what you need to done.

Create a List

Not only is this a great way to get your thoughts organized, it can keep you accountable. Add all the items you can think of to your list and reward yourself each time you check one off the list. You can even divide the list and enlist the help of your fellow family members or friends to lighten your spring cleaning load.

Stock up on Spring Cleaning Supplies

Before you begin the spring cleaning process you will want to make sure you have enough in regards to cleaning supplies. You may need to buy a few new gadgets for those special cleaning projects as well. Buying your cleaning supplies ahead of time gives you the time to shop around for the best deal.

Start the Decluttering Process Early

It is hard to clean a cluttered apartment. You might want to start the decluttering process now before you begin spring cleaning. Remove any items in your apartment that are just taking up space or that need to go in the trash. Getting rid of the items you don’t need will give you some much needed space in your apartment.
